GRAND RAPIDS, MICH - Trevor Thomas' campaign for Congress today again called for Steve Pestka to stop inaccurately claiming that he "consistently had a 100% rating" from the Michigan League of Conservation Voters (LCV). In fact, the LCV scorecard from Mr. Pestka's only full term in office before he began running for another position showed him with a 55% rating, which the Grand Rapids Press noted at the time was the 3rd lowest of any Democrat in the state legislature. Mr. Pestka was notified of this inaccuracy in debates taped on July 16th and 17th, one of which is airing tonight and Sunday on WGVU.

"Mr. Pestka continues to misrepresent his record on the environment, and although this was corrected more than two weeks ago, he still has not fixed his website or rescinded his absolute denial the 55% failing grade," said Clint Wallace, campaign manager to Trevor Thomas. "Trevor Thomas will fight for the environment, and he'll always be straight with voters and constituents about his record."

While in the state legislature, Mr. Pestka joined Republicans and challenged the Clinton Administration by voting against a bill endorsing the Kyoto Protocol, a key treaty to address global warming. In addition to hiding his past environmental voting record, in debates against Trevor Thomas, Mr. Pestka deflected inquiries about his investments in major oil companies and fracking efforts that the League of Conservation Voters and other environmental groups have opposed. Mr. Pestka has not made any public statement to date on his position on fracking in West Michigan. The company he owns stock in is investing $2.2 in a fracking projects, including here in Michigan.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH - U.S. Representative Barney Frank (D-MA) endorsed Michigan 3rd District Congressional candidate Trevor Thomas today, ahead of the Michigan primary on August 7th. Congressman Frank signed a fundraising email on Thomas's behalf, to be sent this morning. Congressman Frank, who has represented Massachusetts since 1981, is widely recognized for his leadership on financial services reform, which included creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Trevor Thomas has emphasized his opposition to Republican efforts to undermine the CFPB.

Pestka hides 0% rating from Planned Parenthood, uses women in ad to claim opposite of his record as an elected representative

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH - Struggling to compete and down in polls, the Steve Pestka campaign attempts a last ditch effort and releases an advertisement this morning featuring women claiming that they "know" Steve Pestka, but describing what they know as opposite of his actual record and current views on women's issues. The ad comes in response to Trevor Thomas's pro-choice advocacy, and the endorsements he has received from: Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the National Organization for Women, the Progressive Women's Alliance, and Governor Jennifer Granholm.

Just yesterday, the President of Michigan NOW called Trevor "the only candidate standing up for a woman's right to choose and women's access to health care." In the July 16, 2012 debate, Pestka once again affirmed that he remains anti-choice, even in cases of rape and incest.

"Steve Pestka sees that voters, and especially women, are deeply concerned about his extreme anti-choice record," said Clint Wallace, Campaign Manager. "The Pestka campaign can keep spending money, but Pestka's record won't change and his view hasn't changed: Pestka doesn't believe in a woman's right to choose even in cases of rape and incest - that's wrong and it's an extreme view."

FACT CHECK

THE CLAIM: "Steve voted to increase funding for Planned Parenthood."

THE FACTS: On the one bill that Steve Pestka voted on that singled out funding for Planned Parenthood, Mr. Pestka voted to defund the organization. That earned him a 0% rating from Planned Parenthood. The ACLU described HB 4655 as a "bill to de-fund Planned Parenthood" and explained that it was an "attempt to restructure the distribution of family planning grants by moving Planned Parenthood to the back of the line." It also noted that "[f]amily planning grants may not be used to fund abortions," meaning that this bill reduced Planned Parenthood's funds for other health care services. (Source: American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan Newsletter, July 2002, Pg 2)

THE CLAIM: "And he'll fight any effort to limit access to birth control."

THE FACTS: In 2000, Pestka voted against an amendment to provide contraceptive coverage for women at no extra cost. (Source: H.B. No. 4830, Dec. 5, 2000) This amendment would have been similar to the provision of the Affordable Care Act that came into effect today, which provides contraception and contraceptive counseling for women without paying a co-pay. Republicans in Washington opposed that provision, and Pestka voted against the concept in the legislature.

THE CLAIM: "Trevor Thomas is distorting the truth about Steve."

THE FACTS: Here is Steve Pestka describing his own record in a debate on July 16, 2012: "When I was in the legislature, I had a right to life voting record." In his last race for Congress, Pestka had a 100% rating from Michigan Right to Life, and that group defended his campaign. And in that campaign, Pestka told the Grand Rapids Press that he opposes a woman's right to choose even in cases of rape or incest. Grand Rapids Press, October 29, 2002. No distortions; just the facts.

THE CLAIM: "I know Steve fights for women's rights... Steve fights for us."

THE FACTS: Steve Pestka's actual record speaks for itself: he has not fought for women's access to healthcare. That is why Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the National Organization for Women, the Progressive Women's Alliance, and so many others have lined up behind Trevor Thomas. These groups want an ally in Congress, and they know Thomas is the best candidate in this primary to fight for them. In the debate on July 16, 2012, Pestka was very clear: "my personal feelings regarding this have not changed."

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH - Michigan Congressional Candidate Trevor Thomas announced today the campaign is airing ads on all major television networks just ahead of the Michigan primary on August 7th. The ad, featuring his mother who worked in a local auto factory for 30 years, shares Thomas' story and the defining difference in the race: Thomas supports stem cell research and a woman's right to choose while his opponent has supported extreme anti-choice positions including not allowing for exceptions of rape or incest.

"Trevor's beliefs and priorities are shaped by his parents and the 30 years they each spent working at GM," said Clint Wallace, Thomas's campaign manager. "Trevor's parents have never waivered in their work ethic and their core values, and neither has Trevor. As his mom says, he'll fight for what's right, and that means a woman's right to choose, protecting Social Security, and his plan to create jobs."

Funding for Thomas's ad has been provided by nearly 3,000 individuals giving as little as a few bucks, with most donations less than $100. Additional donations will be used to purchase new ad spots before election day. Thomas's opponent has raised less money, and has contributed over $590,000 to his campaign accounts to defeat Thomas. Pestka has accepted PAC money in this primary campaign; Thomas has raised funds entirely from individuals, with no PAC contributions.

Momentum continues to mount as community and national leaders announce their support of Thomas. Today, the National Organization for Women (NOW) will announce their endorsement. On Monday, Ionia Mayor Dan Balice, one of the longest-serving mayors in Michigan's 3rd Congressional District, endorsed Thomas. The news follows the endorsements of former Gov. 1999-2000 Scorecard attacks legislators who have "turned their backs on Michigan's proud tradition of conservation leadership."

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH - Trevor Thomas' campaign for Congress today called on Steve Pestka to pull down the environmental section of his website, and to rescind and clarify prior remarks in which he claims he "consistently had a 100% rating" from the Michigan League of Conservation Voters (LCV). In fact, the LCV scorecard from Mr. Pestka's only full term in office before he began running for another position showed him with a 55% rating, which the Grand Rapids Press noted at the time was the 3rd lowest of any Democrat in the state legislature.

"Mr. Pestka should immediately remove the false and misleading section of his website, and issue a statement making clear that he has misstated his own record and acknowledging his actual rating," said Clint Wallace, campaign manager for Trevor Thomas. "Voters deserve accurate statements on the candidates records, and the truth is that Mr. Pestka voted with Republicans on key environmental issues as a state legislator. Mr. Pestka is trying to hide this failing score from Democratic voters."

While in the state legislature, Mr. Pestka joined Republicans and challenged the Clinton Administration by voting against a bill endorsing the Kyoto Protocol, a key treaty to address global warming. The scorecard showing a failing grade is linked below.

In addition to hiding his past environmental voting record, in debates against Trevor Thomas, Mr. Pestka deflected inquiries about his investments in major oil companies and fracking efforts that the League of Conservation Voters and other environmental groups have opposed. Mr. Pestka has not made any public statement to date on his position on fracking in West Michigan. The company he owns stock in is investing $2.2 in a fracking projects, including here in Michigan.

THE FACTS - VOTING RECORD AS A LEGISLATOR: The Grand Rapids Press reported on Mr. Pestka's environmental record in his first term as a state legislator. The following is a direct quote from the Grand Rapids Press in a story that ran on page A1 on September 28, 2000:

State Rep. Steve Pestka, D-Grand Rapids, scored well below the Democratic average, at 55 percent. Only three Democrats scored lower than Pestka. "Sadly, many state legislators have turned their backs on Michigan's proud tradition of conservation leadership," the League's report said. THE FACTS - SPECIFIC VOTES: In 1999, Mr. Pestka stood with Republicans against the Kyoto Climate Treaty, a key treaty negotiated by the Clinton Administration to take on the problem of climate change. See HR No. 98, June 8 1999.

THE FACTS - CURRENT STANCE: Mr. Pestka's current investments include: Devon Energy, an energy company out of Oklahoma, which obtained $2.2 billion from China for its fracking operations in the U.S., particularly in Michigan. THE BOTTOM LINE: On July 18, 2012, Thomas described the scorecard to Steve Pestka during a debate in Battle Creek, and the Thomas campaign provided a copy of the Grand Rapids Press article from 2001 detailing Pestka's failing grade to the Pestka campaign and reporters following the July 18, 2012 debate.

Still, Mr. Pestka has not removed the webpage claiming he was consistently ranked 100%, and in a second debate he continued to claim that Mr. Thomas was incorrect. Mr. Pestka is misrepresenting his own record on the environment.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH - Speaking in the first debate of the Democratic primary race, Congressional candidate Trevor Thomas (MI-3) showed he is the only candidate fighting for progressive values in the Democratic primary. The debate was held at Western Michigan University’s Kendall Center in Battle Creek this evening, in front of a standing-room-only crowd.

"When I was in the legislature I had a right to life voting record," said Steve Pestka. He went on to affirm that he remains personally anti-choice. Mr. Pestka also stood by the claim that appears on his website that he had a sterling voting record on environmental issues - in fact Mr. Pestka received a 55% grade from the League of Conservation Voters for 1999-2000. Pestka defended his record, but showed he is not ready to take on Amash in the fall.

Longtime Kent County Commissioner Paul Mayhue Endorses Trevor Thomas for Congress

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Former Kent County Commissioner W. Paul Mayhue Sr., who served on the commission for 19 years, today endorsed Democrat Trevor Thomas (D-MI) for Congress. Today more than 6,000 people are engaged in a grassroots movement to defeat Congressman Justin Amash. In the past few days, Thomas's anti-choice primary opponent wrote unprecedented checks to fuel the first negative ads of the campaign after Thomas was outpacing him on a number of fronts.

"I am announcing my family’s endorsement of Trevor Thomas for the position of 3rd Congressional District. I have had several discussions with Trevor during this period and feel that he is the best person to represent the 3rd District and the African American Community," said W. Paul Mayhue Sr. , former Kent County Commissioner.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Trevor Thomas's campaign for Congress released the following statement and fact check in response to an attack ad Steve Pestka released today. Additionally, counsel for the Thomas campaign sent notice to stations broadcasting the advertisement advising that the advertisement constitutes defamation under Michigan Law and requesting that the stations require substantiation and cease running the spots immediately.

"Mr. Pestka is struggling as my campaign has some 6,000 people engaged and is standing up to the politics of the past. His level of spending on negative ads to defeat our grassroots movement - rather than Justin Amash - is unprecedented. Mr. Pestka has taken to a new low after his numbers started sinking when folks were told he received a 0% rating from Planned Parenthood for voting to strip the group's funding. My jobs and policy plan makes clear that I will not raise the retirement age for any senior, especially when my own parents are on Social Security, and I'll fight against privatization and other attempts to undermine Social Security," said Trevor Thomas.

"Steve Pestka clearly sees that when primary voters know the truth, they will vote for Trevor Thomas by wide margins," said Clint Wallace, Campaign Manager. "For Mr. Pestka to spend $80,000 to lie to seniors shows he's desperate and wants to distract from his 0% rating from Planned Parenthood, and obscure the fact that Trevor is the only candidate who has the energy, ideas and enthusiasm to beat Justin Amash in November."

FACT CHECK

THE CLAIM: "They paid into Social Security their whole lives, with the promise it would be there for them. But now Trevor Thomas wants to break that promise." / chyron "Trevor Thomas: Break the Promise of Social Security"

THE TRUTH: The text of the Thomas policy plan that Pestka cites reads: " I believe that those folks who are currently relying on Social Security or are approaching that time should know that their benefits will not be altered."

THE CLAIM: "He supports raising the Social Security retirement age, forcing seniors to work for years more." / chyron "Trevor Thomas: Raise the Retirement Age"

THE TRUTH: As the Thomas plan makes clear, he believes that for future generations - only people who are forty years old and under - adjustments to Social Security will be necessary in order to strengthen the system. Thomas makes explicit that he would not alter benefits for anyone on Social Security or approaching retirement, or for anyone remotely close to approaching retirement age.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Trevor Thomas has put forward a plan to create jobs, address the national debt, protect women's access to health care, and deal with the most important issues facing our nation. That plan includes a commitment to fight to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare. Steve Pestka has no plan, and now he is threatening our seniors with falsehoods.

Pestka received a 0% score from Planned Parenthood and 100% score from Michigan Right to Life; shockingly, Pestka campaign cites "support" for Planned Parenthood in TV spot

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Trevor Thomas's campaign for Congress released the following statement and fact check in response to a television ad that hit today with Steve Pestka's grossly inaccurate claim about his record on Planned Parenthood:

"Steve Pestka received a 0% rating from Planned Parenthood. If that's how Pestka offers 'support,' he needs to get off the Democratic ticket," said Clint Wallace, Campaign Manager. "The truth is his campaign is in trouble and now he is fabricating a new version of his voting record. He specifically voted for a bill that Planned Parenthood advised would eliminate funding for their organization, and Michigan Right to Life once touted Pestka's 100% pro-life record in the Legislature. Trevor Thomas, backed by the Progressive Women's Alliance and Jennifer Granholm, actually believes the women of the 3rd District should have the right to choose, and voters should know the truth about Steve Pestka's voting record, no matter how hard his campaign tries to run away from it."

THE CLAIM: "Steve voted to increase funding for Planned Parenthood" / chyron: "Supported Planned Parenthood"

THE TRUTH: Breaking with Democrats, Pestka voted with Republicans and received a 0% rating from Planned Parenthood and a 100% rating from Right to Life of Michigan. THE TRUTH: Pestka directly voted to defund Planned Parenthood in HB 4655 of 2001. Three Democrats who served with Steve Pestka in the State House at the time made the following statement at the time of the vote describing the bill: "Planned Parenthood, the only organization that would be affected by this legislation, serves more than 50,000 men in Michigan every year. With this legislation Michigan will lose the additional Title X funds that Planned Parenthood secured by offering services to women and men above and beyond their contracted amount." THE TRUTH: The ACLU described the HB 4655 as a "bill to de-fund Planned Parenthood" and explained that it was an "attempt to restructure the distribution of family planning grants by moving Planned Parenthood to the back of the line." It also noted that "[f]amily planning grants may not be used to fund abortions," meaning that this bill reduced Planned Parenthood's funds for other health care services.
