Former US Representative Patrick Murphy Endorses Trevor Thomas in Michigan's 3rd Congressional District Primary

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. - Former US Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA), the first Iraq War veteran to be elected to Congress and the sponsor of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010, today endorsed Trevor Thomas (D-MI) for Congress. Murphy, who served in Congress from 2007 to 2011, introduced the bill, signed by President Obama in 2010, that ensured troops could serve openly and honestly and it improved our national security. In his work with the Human Rights Campaign and Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, Thomas helped develop the communications strategy that built public support for the passage of this landmark legislation.

"Trevor Thomas is a passionate public servant who will stand up for middle class families and fight for the people he represents," said former U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA), who served as the lead sponsor of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010. "A member of Congress needs to be able to work with people of different views. The repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell didn't just happen - it required extensive legwork and a willingness to reach across party lines. We would not have succeeded in repealing this discriminatory policy without Trevor. He showed the kind of dedication and commitment we should expect from a member of Congress. In this age of partisanship and rancor, West Michigan - and America - need Trevor Thomas in Congress."

"I am honored that Representative Murphy has endorsed our campaign," said Thomas. "He has shown great courage, both as a member of Congress and serving in Iraq. Representative Murphy's work has brought America closer to realizing its promise: that all are created equal and should have the same opportunities to serve our country. I am grateful to Representative Murphy for his endorsement, and I thank him for all he has done for our country."

A former member of the Blue Dog Caucus, Murphy joins a host of individuals and organizations across the spectrum in supporting Trevor's campaign, including Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Raul Grijalva, Congressional Progressive Caucus Vice Chair Chellie Pingree, former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm, former Kent County Republican Party chair Bob Eleveld, IBEW Local 275, Democracy for America Michigan, and the Progressive Women's Alliance of Western Michigan. Murphy's endorsement comes just weeks after the release of Thomas's comprehensive policy and jobs plan for West Michigan.  The four part plan highlights major policy positions on jobs and the economy, smart investments for our future, equality of opportunity, and American leadership in the world.  Thomas is currently the only candidate in the race with a comprehensive policy and jobs plan: www.TrevorForCongress.com/Plan.
